  • Barça, reigning European champions, will be looking to defend their crown against the team that has beaten them twice in the last five years, Lyon

Football Club Barcelona and Olympique Lyon have won the last eight editions of the UEFA Women's Champions League, which will be nine with this year's competition. The two teams, two best on the continent, meet in Bilbao with the most prestigious title in club football at stake.

On 25 May, San Mamés will host a match for the history books as Olympique Lyon, who lead the way with eight victories, meet Barça, who have won two of the last three editions of the competition and are contesting their fifth final in the last six years.

Jonatan Giráldez's side are dominating the 2020s, but they have yet to conquer one last territory, that of Olympique Lyon, a team they have faced on four official occasions, all of which have gone to French soil, including two Champions League finals.

So, all things considered, this is a match that puts the throne of world women's football at stake. Barça are looking to win their third trophy in four years and Lyon are looking to regain their hegemony against the only rival to have challenged their reign in recent times. A match that could mark a before and after in the best club competition in the world.

And it also takes place in a unique setting, a San Mamés stadium that breathes football on all four sides and which will be spectacularly full. The only thing left to do is to count down the days.
